Icelandair Hotel Reykjavík Natura´s Manager, Solborg Steinthorsdottir, shares her recommendations for the best her hometown, Reykjavík, has to offer.
Solborg has over 30 years of experience in the hotel business, including managing some of the Edda Hotels, a sister chain of Icelandair Hotels. She has experience in Iceland too: each summer, she travels somewhere different in the country with her husband and children. She loves the outdoors and has hiked along Fimmvorduhals, where the volcanic eruption in spring of 2010 took place, and Hvannadalshnukur, Iceland’s highest peak. Closer to town, Solborg has taken innumerable trips to Mt. Esja, a perfect spot for family hiking.
In the city, Solborg enjoys art exhibitions, theatre and concerts. In the hotel’s immediate vicinity, she always recommends that people visit Oskjuhlid Hill and Nauthólsvík beach. Both are excellent outdoor areas with activities that suit the whole family, such as biking, hiking and sea swimming—if you’re brave enough!

BIKE RENTAL
You can rent a bike, helmet, and special child attachments from reception. There are many trails that you can choose from; we recommend travelling along the city’s coastline by bike.

OSKJUHLID HILL
Oskjuhlid’s multitude of cycle and walking/running paths has made it one of Reykjavik’s most popular natural sights. Almost 200,000 trees have been planted in the hills of Oskuhlid, making it one of the capital’s most forested areas.
There are also interesting geological and historical monuments in the area. The Pearl offers the best view of Reykjavik and its surroundings. For those unable to make it out of town, there is even a man-made geyser that spouts water on a regular basis.
NAUTHOLSVIK BEACH
Nautholsvik is the only white sandy beach in Reykjavik and it’s virtually at the hotel’s doorstep. There are excellent clothing and shower facilities for guests and refreshment facilities available.
In front of the service centre there is also a large rectangular pool with water that is about 38 ° C / 100.4 F. The city even keeps part of the sea warm for those who want to take a dip in the North Atlantic itself! It’s a great way to spend a summer day in Reykjavik!
ICELANDIC BEDTIME STORIES AT ICELANDAIR HOTEL REYKJAVIK NATURA
The perfect way to spend a cosy evening and start your weekend in Iceland, these bedtime stories are free for guests to attend and presented in English. We also encourage you to wear your pyjamas; we’ll provide the hot chocolate and some blankets under which to snuggle during the readings.
Each week’s bedtime story will feature a different theme from Icelandic literature, including readings from Nobel Prize winning author Halldor Laxness and a night devoted to the burgeoning genre of Icelandic crime fiction.
Every Thursday at 21:00, admission is free and everyone is welcome - whether with striped pyjamas and bunny rabbit slippers or not!

ICELANDIC FILMS DIRECTED BY BALTASAR KORMAKUR
Baltasar Kormákur is one of Scandinavia’s leading directors. All his films have been very successful domestically and have been shown abroad, some receiving numerous awards. His most recent accomplishment is directing Contraband, an American thriller based on the Icelandic film Reykavik-Rotterdam (2008).
Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura shows three of his films in the hotel’s auditorium 6 nights a week.
